Position: Children’s Advocate
Responsible To: Associate Director
Hours: Monday—Friday Afternoon/evenings
Full-Time, Salaried, On-Call Rotation
Project Safe, Inc. values providing survivors of domestic violence with a fresh start, individualized attention, support, and confidentiality. Our residents’ safety and growth are our top priority. To ensure every parent/guardian and child’s needs are met, it’s vital all advocates represent Project Safe well in their daily interactions with residents, staff/volunteers, and other partnering agencies throughout the community, with thoughtful evaluation, encouraging collaboration, and careful stewardship.
– Children’s Advocate should meet with each parent/guardian and child in shelter within 72 hours of entrance for children’s intake; intake includes assessing child’s needs and reviewing non-violent discipline techniques, child health, hygiene, school work, etc.
–Ensure all coordinated activities and groups are properly supervised, trauma informed, engaging and inclusive.
–Provide individual support and assistance to each child through regular one on one meetings; begin establishing rapport in hopes the Children’s Advocate will be a part of the family’s support system and be seen as a resource for needs related to each child
–Ensure clients are provided a high quality of support and community knowledge; advocates should maintain and update resource file on recreational, social and education programs offered to children and parents in the Athens area
–Coordinate and schedule services for children and parents as necessary, including but not limited to: school enrollment, tutor/mentor, counseling, domestic violence education, parenting classes, professional counseling, childcare, arrangement of transportation and school social work services
–Advocates should be open to new, unorthodox ways of learning and providing support and will appropriately follow-up regarding a parent’s child rearing choices.
–We believe teamwork leads to better quality services. Advocates should work closely with staff/volunteers/interns in handling issues related to children and adults living at the shelter, documenting appropriately and timely.
–As tasks at shelter vary each day, advocates should assist in providing crisis intervention services. These services will include: answering emergency hotline and business lines, shelter coverage, providing emergency financial assistance, making referrals, individual support, resource and referral information as needed.
–Attending and participating in bi-weekly Case Staffing / Case Management, Joint Staffers and monthly Staff Meetings.
–We are always trying to improve our delivery of services and evaluating how and where improvements are needed, and where they may be a gap in services. To help in the evaluation or our work, distributing client surveys, and being intentional about incorporating the questions covered on surveys in meetings with clients, and responding to feedback.
–Advocate will seek out and receive ongoing training related to children and domestic violence and along with other staff assess incorporating new learned approaches to the work.
–Other duties include: assist with volunteer training; supervision of volunteers and interns, coordinate annual Holiday party, and other duties as assigned by Executive Director or Associate Director
Necessary skills and Qualifications
Master’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Knowledge and experience working with children and history of trauma, abuse, and/or other related skills
Attentive to detail, demonstrate emotional maturity, flexible in management of responsibilities, and creativity in delivery of services
Counseling experience preferred.
